WHO ARE WE
Sustainable Youth is a small group of UCLA undergraduate students who are passionate about environmental education. Our purpose is to expose urban youth to local and global environmental issues and sustainable practices through hands-on experimentation and demonstration in the classroom. Our 9 week curriculum (during UCLA's winter quarter) is catered to fourth or fifth grade students. Each hour-long lessons focuses on different themes or issues pertaining to sustainability, such as biodiversity, water, and food. SCHOOLS Members of Sustainable Youth currently teach in two fourth grade and one fifth grade classroom at Norra Sterry Elementary School and two fourth grade classrooms at Warner Elementary School. We are very grateful for the teachers and staff of these schools for allowing us to work with their wonderful children. If you are interested in having Sustainable Youth teach at your elementary school, please contact us! FUNDING Sustainable Youth receives funding for all lesson plans from UCLA's The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF), a grant-making fund for UCLA sustainability projects. The goal of TGIF is to enable and empower students to take an active role in making UCLA a leader in sustainability. TGIF is funded by a $4 per quarter student fee. The fund began in Fall 2008 and has persisted for 10 years. Therefore, no cost is required of the elementary schools where we teach. “My class at Nora Sterry looked forward to every Friday to see the Sustainable Youth group. Their energy and enthusiasm was contagious and the class learned so much in that environment. We are sure that all schools will benefit from and appreciate this amazing group of students!” - Jan Goodman, Teacher, Norra Sterry Elementary "Sustainable Youth has, by far, been one my favorite extracurriculars in my undergraduate experience. Being able to share my passion for the environment with the students of Nora Sterry and watching them learn week by week has been such a rewarding experience. No matter how long of a day, week, or quarter we've been having, the endless energy and genuine excitement of the kids always keeps us going. Sustainable Youth rocks. Kids are awesome. And the environment is pretty cool too. I hope to be doing this for years to come." - Tiffany Tran, UCLA Undergraduate |
